Synoptic Project Research Development
FEB - MAY 2024
ABOUT
P.U.B is being made in response to my own research incentive: to compare dialogue mechanics relative to player engagement.
This project aims to inform my research through player testing and surveys, including an extensive dialogue system which incorporates mechanics such as skill checks, quick-time events and context-based dialogue options to provide a comprehensive dataset for analysis.

P.U.B encapsulates my specialisations as a game designer, focusing on developing robust systems which can be used to inform and present narrative.
DEVELOPMENT
Developing P.U.B provided numerous challenges, such as developing the dialogue system and implementing dialogue mechanics on top of that system in a limited timeframe.

The system I am developing follows a linear branching model, using Unreal Engine 5's actor components to create parent functions which allow for duplication to child objects, providing a safe environment to develop self-contained functions.

Several problems have emerged which I plan to fix in an updated version of the project which fulfills my original vision.

ENVIRONMENTAL STORYTELLING
Whilst crafting the environment P.U.B would take place in I took the liberty to ensure the pub itself was crowded with at least a dozen NPCs, to make the pub feel lived in... even if they were robots. Each group of NPCs tell their own story, with their own reasons to be at the pub, can you tell why they've come to the P.U.B?

SOFTWARE & SKILLS

The development of this project has lead to an increased familiarity and understanding of Unreal Engine, due to the multitude of systems i have been working with such as the animation tools, material editing, blueprint interfaces and actor components.

The writing and research aspects of this project has also improved my critical thinking and evaluative skills, forcing me to consider all aspects of development, providing description and reasoning for their inclusion.
